Canadians for a Nuclear Weapons Convention
The Order of Canada is the country’s highest
civilian honour and is the centrepiece of Canada’s honours
system. It recognizes a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication
to the community and service to the nation. Over five
hundred recipients of the Order of Canada have joined an
initiative led by John Polanyi, C.C., Douglas Roche, O.C., and Murray
Thomson, O.C., calling for international negotiations to achieve a
Nuclear Weapons Convention – a verifiable treaty on the
prohibition and elimination of nuclear weapons.
Ernie Regehr, O.C., co-founder of Project Ploughshares along with Murray Thomson, is supporting this initiative, and was involved lin successfully getting the unanimous consent of the House of Commons to the motion from the Senate on December 7,2010, to support a number of nuclear disarmament initiatives. Project Ploughshares Calgary ha been contacting Order of Canada recipients living in Calgary to inform them of this initiative.
