About Us
Project Ploughshares was founded in 1976, during the Cold War, as a peace education and research group and continues to provide well-respected commentary on disarmament issues for the use of all Canadians. The national group's website is www.ploughshares.ca. The Calgary group (www.ploughsharescalgary.ca) has been bringing conflict resolution and peace education to schools and community groups since 1982.
* Project Ploughshares Calgary ran an Anti-Bullying Drama project in Calgary schools, using the All Nations Theatre Company, in the late nineties.
* With grant money, we also developed a relevant manual for senior high Social Studies teachers, named "Anti-Bullying Curriculum Materials". This manual shows teachers and students how to relate world and local news, as well as their own lives, to bullying, victim, bystander and peace-maker models of behaviour.
* Project Ploughshares Calgary teamed with the Alberta Teachers' Association to have published their Safe and Caring Schools Primary Level guide entitled 'Bullying: What you can do about it'.
The puppets and basic scripts for Puppets for Peace have been bought from FAN, 'Friends And Neighbors' club, a community-based educational group in Ontario. FAN provide puppet programs to teach children a number of different social skills. Each program is written with the research assistance of child psychologists, social workers, youth workers, play therapists, teachers and parents.
All puppeteers for Puppets for Peace are professional actors. The Steering Committee for Puppets for Peace comprises former teachers, and volunteers experienced in many fields. The Fund-raising and Promotions Committee is made up of young professionals dedicated to the cause of bully-proofing and peaceful relationships.
