Peace Education: Embracing The Challenges of Newcomer Youth.

Posted on November 17, 2024November 17, 2024

Join Lorraine Kinsman for: Peace Education: Embracing The Challenges of Newcomer Youth. When newcomer youth and families settle in Calgary as their new home of choice, there are a multitude of challenges that face them that go far beyond the expected needs of finding a home and registering for school. The Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth offers numerous services and supports for newcomer families to assist them with meeting their settlement needs.

Over the past three years, the number of newcomer youth in schools has increased by 468%, placing significant demands on teachers, parents and students. Depending on the age, history and social/emotional needs of the youth, responses to stressful situations vary greatly and require differing approaches. With the huge increases in population, these demands have intensified in both numbers as well as needs. We will be exploring the needs and the possible responses available as well as needed – all connected and reflective of elements of peace education.
