
The crucial skill of conflict resolution involves understanding different perspectives, communicating effectively, and finding compromises that satisfy all parties involved. Conflict is normal and healthy. A way that we can reduce our avoidance, fear, and rework our negative assumptions about conflict is by working on our capacity to resolve disputes is by building our conflict resolution skills.
Alongside conflict resolution, is the value of mutual respect. Practicing mutual respect includes recognizing the inherent value in others. This allows strengthened community bonds through cooperation and sets the stage for peacebuilding work.
Strategies for peaceful conflict resolution include:
- Active Listening
- Empathy
- Stay Calm
- Focus on the Issue, Not the Person
- Seek Common Ground
- Be Open to Compromise
- Use ‘I’ Statements
- Set Boundaries
- Seek Meditation if needed
Conflict resolution and mutual respect are vital to be able to create structures of peace at all levels, from local to global.
