Of these 12,330+ nuclear weapons, approximately 2,100 are on high alert, meaning they are ready for use within 15-20 minutes.
In 2023, $91.4 billion was spent on these weapons, and the amount is steadily increasing.
The most critical problem is the daily threat we live under caused by the continuing risk of accidental use of these weapons and the repeated threats of their intentional use by leaders.
Why do these nuclear weapons matter?
What might happen if these were used?
If even a very small number of these weapons are exploded, we know that there will be enormous physical, heat, and radiological effects causing immense human and environmental destruction. More recently, we have also been advised by climatologists that the firestorms caused by the explosions will result in soot rising into the stratosphere and blocking the sun, creating a “nuclear darkness” that results in a nuclear famine. So even a small amount of weapons used could have the consequence of destructive famine, causing 2 billion deaths.
